पैन(Permanent Account Number), या स्थायी खाता संख्या देश में विभिन्न करदाताओं की पहचान करने का एक साधन है। पैन एक 10-अंकीय विशिष्ट पहचान वाला अल्फ़ान्यूमेरिक नंबर (अक्षर और संख्या दोनों युक्त) है, जो भारतीयों को सौंपा गया है, जो ज्यादातर कर का भुगतान करने वालों को दिया जाता है।।
पहचान की पैन प्रणाली एक कंप्यूटर आधारित प्रणाली है जो प्रत्येक भारतीय कर भुगतान इकाई को विशिष्ट पहचान संख्या प्रदान करती है। इस पद्धति के माध्यम से, किसी व्यक्ति के लिए कर संबंधी सभी जानकारी एक ही पैन नंबर के खिलाफ दर्ज की जाती है जो सूचनाओं के भंडारण के लिए प्राथमिक कुंजी के रूप में कार्य करती है। इसे पूरे देश में साझा किया जाता है और इसलिए कर भुगतान करने वाली संस्थाओं के किसी भी दो लोगों के पास एक ही पैन नहीं हो सकता है।
एक बार पैन आवंटित हो जाने के बाद, यह हमेशा के लिए समान रहता है। पैन आवेदन करने के लिए, किसी को या तो यूटीआई ()UTI में आवेदन करना होगा या एनएसडीएल (NSDL)और वे आयकर विभाग की ओर से पैन आवेदन पर कार्रवाई करते हैं। पैन का उपयोग केवल आयकर के उद्देश्य के लिए किया जाता है।
